salvador dali

I'm going to be going to the Dali exhibit at the High Museum this weekend. Dali spearheaded...

Salvador Dalí
I found this quote from Dali, and I loved it. It led to a series of 'crazy' quotes that I found.

"Since I don't smoke, I decided to grow a mustache - it is better for the health.
However, I always carried a jewel-studded cigarette case in which, instead of tobacco, were carefully placed several mustaches, Adolphe Menjou style. I offered them politely to my friends: "Mustache? Mustache? Mustache?"
Nobody dared to touch them. This was my test regarding the sacred aspect of mustaches."

Paulo Coelho
"Anyone who lives in her own world is crazy. Like schizophrenics, psychopaths, maniacs. I mean people who are different from others.'
Like you?'
On the other hand,' Zedka continued, pretending not to have heard the remark, 'you have Einstein, saying that there was no time or space, just a combination of the two. Or Columbus, insisting that on the other side of the world lay not an abyss but a continent. Or Edmund Hillary, convinced that a man could reach the top of Everest. Or the Beatles, who created an entirely different sort of music and dressed like people from another time. Those people--and thousands of others--all lived in their own world."
~Paulo Coehlo

Dr. Seuss
"Being crazy isn't enough."
~Dr. Seuss

"Give me a museum and I'll fill it."
- Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
"It's kind of fun to do the impossible."
- Walt Disney (1901-1966)
"Sanity may be madness but the maddest of all is to see life as it is and not as it should be." - Don Quixote (one of my roommates favorite quotes)

a new year

This was one of my favorite books when I was little...the premise: that you choose your "new year." It's the day that feels perfect to you. My new year would be the best day of fall, when the air is at its crisp-est, the leafs have the most variety of color, and the wind blows through browning fields. And all you want to do is pour some hot soup. What a great idea though, the day that you start fresh, celebrate a new year for yourself, and plan what changes you want in the new year.

I have been receiving thoughts from from the "universe" for the past couple of months. It is by the guy who wrote The Secret if you're familiar with that book/movie. The idea is that whatever vibes you send out into the universe is what you receive back. Essentially, you will everything to happen in your life by imagining it will happen. There is a sort of truth to that I think because we see what we want to see in life, and most of what happens to you are the opportunities you choose to see. Here is the note i got yesterday, and it just cracked me up:
People who give, Lila, are given to. People who care, are cared for. And people who love... age slower, run faster, jump higher, eat healthier, tend to live in cottages, are as happy with friends as they are alone, climb more trees, skip when they could walk, kiss when they could talk, take the odd Friday off, experience faster manifestations, and are really popular with animals. And you're just the sort, Lila, we'd expect to find with lots of friends, in a tree, on an island you named after your last squirrel.

Love, baby -
The Universe

This book is the combination of the ideas that form these thoughts from the universe that brighten my day so much. They are like the yogi tea quotes i live for! Go to tut.com to sign up for notes from the universe, and if you haven't started buying yogi tea, you are way behind!

between a bullet and a Target

"free to be"

So I was loving the Target commercial with this New Seekers song until I got an email about Target's shady deals. Since the Supreme Court made it legal for corporations to donate to political campaigns, Target became one of the first organizations to participate. And who did they pick to support, a far-right, anti-gay, anti-immigrant candidate for Minnesota governor. Many college students have organized boycotts. Washington University has had an official boycott from all products they use from target. So think twice before you go to Target--no matter how cheap their clothes are.

i went lickety-splickly out to my old '66

Now the sun's coming up, I'm riding with Lady Luck, freeway cars and trucks,
Stars beginning to fade, and I lead the parade
Just a-wishing I'd stayed a little longer,
Oh, Lord, let me tell you that the feeling's getting stronger.
~Tom Waits

So when Robyn and i were driving to Utah, we kept seeing signs for Route 66. Starting in Chicago, route 66 takes you all the way to LA, California. If I ever do get to move to California, this roadtrip is my path.

down by the banksy of the hanky panky...

BANKSY (1974/5-present)
Bristol, England

i first became introduced to banksy when i was attending university of new orleans. one of urban planning classes focused on public art. we watched a great movie called "bomb it", and we were talking about an artistic battle goin
g on in new orleans. graffiti in new orleans takes on a new meaning. one of my favorites is under I-10, where they took down rows of oak trees to build I-10, a disputedly racist decision, there is graffiti of oak trees up the supports for the highway. there is an infamous graffiti artist in new orleans who has challenged what is public art. the grey ghost goes over other people's graffiti with grey paint, and these blobs are his signature, claiming he has as much right to put up his "art" as other graffitti-ers. there are bumper stickers and telephone pole signs saying we hate the grey ghost while some t-shirt companies have coined the slogan "grey is graffiti." all of this discourse more or less fine until truly famous graffiti artist banksy came to new orleans. then fred radtke, aka the grey ghost, started covering up banksy's expensive masterpieces. besides the fact that banksy is truly talented, his works sell for literally $500,000 and are owned by celebrities such as angelina jolie. despite his rights, it seems like a complete loss that the works disappear forever because of the grey ghost's effort to make a statement. fred was arrested a few years ago for covering up a commissioned piece of art--those public art lines get fuzzy! banksy's final move, to graffiti the grey ghost covering him up--can the grey ghost beat that?

banksy's work has incredible political messages. he has traveled from city to city and inspired not only graffiti artists but modern art in general.
banksy's gallery!

while banksy's identity has remained a mystery for years, there is a movie coming out about him--with his face covered entirely from as much as i can tell.
it's playing in very few cinemas, but it is currently playing at Athena in athens--which is the only place it will be playing in georgia.

i kind of like that he has kept his identity a secret. as for me, banksy has inspired me to go to graduate school for art history and to study the underground movements of public art.
